Supper Club Hidden Kitchen // Mainz
It seems kind of an unwritten law that wine-growing regions, maybe more than others, know how to celebrate the delights of the table. Hence it was probably only a question of time until the Rhinehessen area would have its first secret dining address, the supper club Hidden Kitchen. In a small town surrounded by vineyards, just 18km outside of Mainz, Patrizia and her partner Aziz are hosting gourmet dinner events every 4-6 weeks. Aziz is by the way of Turkish origin, and being equally crazy about cooking as Patrizia he brings in some authentic recipes and flavours from his home country and family. The couple invites people to their spacious eat-in kitchen with a view onto the garden. Those interested can also watch how the menu is getting prepared on the stove directly next to the table, and take back home some inspirations, tips and tricks for their own cooking. And if the weather allows, the table will be set outside underneath the 100 years old walnut tree, possibly quite often as the region is bathed in sunshine.
The Hidden Kitchen is a melting pot of countries and continents. The menu in early February for example was a ‘Culinary Trip Across 7 Countries’, featuring India, France, Spain, Vietnam, Italy, England and of course Turkey: 7 courses with corresponding wines for an all inclusive price of €65, a really fair deal I would say. You can furthermore trust that not only the cooking, but also the selection of wines is in good hands. Patrizia has grown up in the region and is very familiar with particularly the young local talents, Rhinehessen wine-makers with state-of-the-art products.
The cooking virus she got from her grandmother who introduced her to the basics of local cuisine when she was a child. Until today, she loves many of those traditional dishes from the region. But as a general cooking enthusiast with a big and steadily growing collection of recipe books she is keen to try out new things and styles all the time. Some years ago, she even turned her hobby into a business, a private chef and finger food service that customers could book for parties and events at their homes. Patrizia also initiated a cooking club with friends, 5 couples meeting regularly to cook and eat together for nothing less but 18 years! The supper club Hidden Kitchen is her most recent project that she started last year. Another one already in the pipeline is a wood-fired oven that Patrizia and Aziz want to build in the garden to enjoy – and of course share with their supper club guests – homemade bread, focaccia, pizza and roasts.
The next Hidden Kitchen event takes place on April 13th. “Springtime Greetz” is the motto, including the long awaited come back of asparagus, strawberries and rhubarb, yummy!!
