innen schön rosa Supper Club // Göttingen
“Exciting like a blind date, just much tastier!”, that’s eating in the underground according to Christoph and Johanna, the hosts of innen schön rosa. At this point I am struggling with how to best translate “innen schön rosa”: Beautifully pink inside maybe? Just the right shade of pink inside? Anyway, I’m sure you get the idea behind the name of Göttingen’s first and so far only supper club. Already some years ago, a magazine article on underground restaurants had caught Christoph’s and Johanna’s attention. But they were feeling uncertain at the time whether such concept would fly in a small city like theirs. Come May last year, still no one else had picked up on the idea. So they decided to become Göttingen’s supper club pioneers.
After a successful test run with friends and family, preparations started for their first official date end of July. But Johanna and Christoph didn’t want to just gather friends, friends of friends and work colleagues around the table. Their idea was to target complete strangers right from the beginning. Instead of spreading the word through social media like most underground restaurants do, innen schön rosa used some old-school marketing tools and started a little guerrilla campaign: Flyers and business cards got printed, which they tied to tree trunks, lampposts and parked bicycles across the city centre. “Co-eaters wanted!” was the simple and catchy message. The action triggered some spontaneous conversations with people stopping on their way to wherever and asking questions. From others, they received very positive and encouraging emails. And even though not everything went according to plan, the first dinner was a great success. 8 hungry mouths to feed had come together, and guests and hosts were equally happy about the new experience.
Up to 10 people can be seated around Johanna’s and Christoph’s dining table. They serve a 5-course menu for a donation between €40 and €50 including aperitif, a selection of wines, coffee and digestive. In terms of the products they use, they go for regional, seasonal and if possible organic, but always fresh ingredients as the primary rule. Last autumn for example, guests were enjoying venison – of course beautifully pink inside – from the Harz mountains. Grandpa Walter had won that piece of deer in a skat tournament. There was also a gratin from potatoes grown in Dad’s garden and mushrooms from the nearby forests. And for what family and forests can’t provide, it certainly helps that Christoph works for a delicatessen wholesale company, not a bad position for a food lover and supper club host.
4-5 dinners are planned per year, the next one is scheduled for Saturday, 16th February. For May, Johanna and Christoph have announced a Garage Dinner. They feel like organizing a bigger event with 20-25 people, and their garage with the adjacent garden is the perfect place for a hopefully warm early summer night. The menu isn’t set yet, but reservations for both dinner events can already be made on the beautifully designed innen schön rosa blog site. As a little foretaste, here is a recipe by innen schön rosa for a fruity dessert named “Eton Mess”.
