Gerüchteküche // Braunschweig

The story of the Gerüchteküche supper club (‘rumor kitchen’, the German equivalent to the English rumor mill) is a story full of love: Love for cooking, for superior culinary treats in general, love for wine, red in particular, love for contemporary arts, love for receiving guests. And last but not least there is the love story of Kirsten and Darius, the hosts of Gerüchteküche. Their relationship started at the very young age of 15. Today they are both 52 and still happy together: Wow! Meanwhile, their story does furthermore include 3 grown-up children, 2 dogs and 1 horse. But let’s not wander off too far.

Gerüchteküche has more “wow!” moments to offer: The first amazement hits you when discovering a supper club in Braunschweig, not known for being a trendsetting spot on the map. But fertile grounds for good ideas can be found anywhere. And after a holiday trip to Havanna, Kirsten and Darius decided to import the concept of Cuba’s famous ‘paladares’ to Braunschweig. Since mid last year, Gerüchteküche is simmering once or twice per month in Kirsten’s and Darius’ private house – one of the kind that is likely to trigger another “wow!” moment by making you feel like thrown right into a photo shooting for some architecture & design magazine: A large table for 12 with a view to the open kitchen and surrounded by huge paintings is part of a timeless, classy interior design scenery, mainly in black, white and shades of grey. Or shades of green, blue and white if you happen to come in a warm summer night when the table is set outside, in the garden nearby the illuminated swimming pool. But before you have time to get intimidated by such perfect setup, you will find yourself with a glass in your hand and chatting with your co-eaters before all together go through another 6 “wow!” moments: 6 courses of highly ambitious international cuisine based on seasonal and local products, often inspired by the hosts’ various experiences with star-decorated restaurants.

The menu with its sometimes experimental combinations of flavors is Kirsten’s creative domain. Everything she serves is homemade. Here is for example what she has planned for June: Beetroot with raspberries and lettuce julienne, saffron risotto with licorice, baked codfish in a filo dough basket, lime estragon sorbet, Ossobuco with passion fruit polenta, French pastry Puits d’Amour (‘fountain of love’, here is where the love story goes on) with blueberries – all this including aperitif, water and coffee for a recommended donation of €45, excluding wine that will be charged extra. The selection of wines is in the hands of Darius. He is the master of the wine cellar, a true one which is professionally kept at the constant temperature of 14°C. Last summer when temperature-wise Germany tried to compete with the south of Greece or even North Africa, Darius and Kirsten did notice a growing interest from the supper club guests in visiting their cool basement hideaway.
